Water skipper nests (or waterskipper nests) are the spawning pools of the aquatic waterskippers, and the bane of smitemasters, sailors, and river traders everywhere.

Description[]

Waterskippers are carnivorous animals, occurring naturally throughout the Eighth. Over the millennia, the Rooted Empire engineered waterskippers to live underground and defend their tunnels. When the Onsuary Floods strike, the Empire uses the temporary underground lakes that form to insert waterskippers into dungeons.

When they reach maturity, a male and a female waterskipper will make a nest on the water, scavenging sand and branches from nearby areas and solidifying them into rough piles with their saliva. After the nest is finished and a brief mating dance is performed, the female occupies the nest and begins to spawn offspring at a prodigious rate, three times faster than the roach queen, herself no slouch in this department. Waterskipper offspring are born ready to slaughter prey with terrifying efficiency.[1]

Behavior[]

Movement[]

  • Nests are stationary, but can be stunned and pushed around.

Vulnerabilities[]

Other[]

  • Every 10 turns, each nest will spawn a single waterskipper on an adjacent square of water.
    • Nests will only spawn if there's a visible target and the nest isn't stunned.
  • Which square gets chosen is prioritized using these rules:
    • The square chosen will be the one closest to the nearest target using the Pythagorean theorem. In the case of a tie, priority is given in the order: NW, N, NE, W, E, SW, S, SE.
    • If the nest is under the influence of a brain, it will use the brain's distance to decide.
  • Nests can only spawn in water or shallow water, and only if the squares are not occupied by another creature.
  • Nests can spawn waterskippers on force arrows regardless of their direction. Waterskipper nests also ignore orthosquares.
