For the DROD RPG element, see Ortho square (RPG).

Orthosquares, or more formally orthogonal squares, are tiles that prevent all diagonal movement.

Behavior[]

See the interactions page for a list of all interactions for this element.
  • Creatures can neither enter nor leave orthosquares via a diagonal movement.
    • If any tile of a rock giant is bound by orthosquares, the giant cannot move diagonally.
  • Objects and creatures cannot be pushed diagonally into or out of an orthosquare.
  • Briar, aumtlich beams, explosions, and weapons completely ignore orthosquares.
  • Roach queens can lay eggs diagonally across orthsquares.
  • Waterskipper nests can spawn waterskippers diagonally across orthosquares.
  • Gentryii heads respect orthosquares, but their chains do not.
  • Slayer wisps respect orthosquares.
  • Active fegundos will not explode when trying to move diagonally into or out of an orthosquare.
  • Orthosquares completely prevent the growth of tarstuff and fluff. Puffs standing on orthosquares cannot merge into fluff. If a fluff vent is on orthosquares, it can only ever produce puffs.
  • Trying to push a puff diagonally into or out of an orthosquare will not crush it, unless the pusher is wielding a caber.
  • Orthosquares do not prevent a tarstuff mother from growing tarstuff onto her own tile.
  • Brains do not recognize orthosquares as potential obstacles when guiding monsters.
  • Orthosquares prevent the player from activating orbs by bumping them diagonally while affected by a power token. However, they do not prevent Halph from hitting orbs diagonally.
  • Citizens and engineers can place build markers across orthosquares diagonally, but they cannot reach relay stations across orthosquares diagonally.

Trivia[]

Although a diagonal analogue of orthosquares was proposed as far back as 2003[1] and considered in 2012 as a potential new element in DROD 5.0,[2] it has not been introduced in any release.
