Halph is a nephew of Beethro Budkin, and a major character throughout the DROD series.

Story[]

Early life[]

Halph was born around 134 B.D. His mother is Vonnifa Budkin, Beethro's sister, while his father's name is unknown and has made no appearances in DROD. It is not clear as to whether or not he has adopted "Budkin" as his last name.

Halph first appears in the epilogue of King Dugan's Dungeon where he, along with his brothers (and/or cousins), listen to his uncle Beethro's stories of how he cleared the vile sanctum. Halph also appears in the prologue and epilogue of Gunthro and the Epic Blunder, this time listening to Beethro recount the adventures of his grandfather Gunthro.

Journey to Rooted Hold[]

In 148 B.D., Halph accompanies Beethro to King Dugan's Dungeon while Beethro investigates what's behind the door in Tenth Level. He helps the smitemaster by opening doors, reaching inaccessible areas, and even by staying out of danger, as monsters never target him. However, he often strays away from Beethro to explore on his own, including wandering away to talk with goblins.

However, as the pair venture together, Halph becomes resentful of his uncle's rashness, quick temper, and bull-headedness. He believes Beethro is too quick to butcher monsters, murder goblins, and refuse the counsel of the Empire citizens who are trying to explain things to him. By the Twenty-Fifth Level, 39th Slayer and later the Pit Thing finally catches up to Halph alone and manages to sway him against Beethro. He then leaves his uncle and heads to Rooted Hold to figure things out in his own way.

The City Beneath[]

In 149 B.D., Beethro finally reaches Rooted Hold and eventually reunites with his nephew. Halph explains that he's since become an apprentice Architect working alongside the Dungeon Architect's Association. He warns Beethro to not interfere with what the Empire is doing.

Beethro continues to interfere, in a bid to find answers. Halph encounters him at Upper Lowest and commands his team of builders to block the smitemaster from reaching Lowest Point, but Beethro is persistent and pushes through.

Devilishly Dangerous Dungeons of Doom[]

The Second Sky[]

By 151 B.D., Halph has been promoted to 18th Architect, and has led his team of Engineers to rebuild the Rapid Collection System (RCS), an ancient railway network which allows quick connection to the various continents of the Eighth.

Initially, Halph intended to make use of the RCS as part of his action plan to help the Patrons gather the citizens of the overworld, such that they could survive The Turning. However, when Beethro eventually discovers and shares with Halph the Patrons' secret plans to imprison and experiment on the abovegrounders, Halph becomes appalled, and eventually decides to work with Beethro and the Archivists instead. He endorses Beethro's plan of using Truth Vessels to warn the abovegrounders, and sets off for Tueno and Clarbag to personally lead the evacuation efforts there.
