The Guard is an enemy that carries a sword similar to a smitemaster's standard weapon. Similar to both the smitemaster and the Slayer, during one turn, a Guard may either swing his weapon clockwise/counterclockwise or move in one of the eight directions. While a Guard always attempts to turn his weapon towards the smitemaster, he is less nimble than the Slayer and hence easier to be killed by the smitemaster. Guards will not turn their weapons on each other or on the Slayer. However, they will nonetheless kill most other killable monsters if these monsters get in their way.
Guards first appeared on the final level of Journey to Rooted Hold, led by the 39th Slayer, as the Poppy Brigade in a bid to stop Beethro Budkin from advancing deeper into the City beneath.
Guards feature prominently in The City Beneath, though not necessarily hostile to the player. Part of the playthrough requires Beethro to disguise himself as a guard in order to sneak into Castle Dugan.
