Serpent

The Serpent, the original Snake enemy

Snakes, occasionally referred to a wryms, are the collective name to refer to Serpents, Rattlesnakes, and Adders.

Behavior[]

As a rule of thumb, all Snake monsters have these movement patterns. They are complex, but hardly unlearnable.

Movement[]

  • If the serpent's prey is directly in front of behind it, it will try to move forward.
  • Otherwise, the serpent will try to move vertically or horizontally toward its prey until they are in the same row or column.
  • The serpent will alternate between moving horizontally and moving vertically every five moves. If the spawn counter ends in 0-4, the serpent will prefer to move horizontally. If the spawn counter ends in 5-9, the serpent will prefer to move vertically.
  • If the serpent's desired move is blocked, then it will try to make the following moves in order: N, E, S, W. If the serpent cannot move, it will remain stuck.

Vulnerabilities[]

Other[]

  • Snakes can traverse shallow water.
  • A snake's head is a brain-visible object, but the rest of its body is invisible.
  • Snakes can't move across any type of potion or horn.

Serpent Exclusive[]

  • If a serpent's desired move is blocked, and it cannot move at all, its tail will shrink by one.

Rattlesnake Exclusive[]

  • A rattlesnake's tail can be cut with a Weapon. Doing so shrinks it by one.

Adder Exclusive[]

  • An adder's head can be cut with a Weapon. Doing so shrinks it by one.
  • If an adder's desired move is blocked, and it cannot move at all, its tail will shrink by one.
  • Adders can consume other monsters, with the exception of Rock giants, Gentryii, Puffs, and other wyrms. They grow one tile for each monster eaten. Adders can also eat the corpses of rock golems.
