Engineers are arguably the most important citizens of the Rooted Empire, for they're the ones who construct and maintain the Empire's domain across the vast spaces of the Beneath.

Description[]

Where builders have the simple task of carrying preconstructed items to predetermined places, engineers are a smarter lot, carrying with them the resources and tools they need to build anything anywhere. Because engineers are therefore unshackled from the complex supply chain that plagues builders, the engineering corps is far more efficient and versatile at getting the job done.[1]

Behavior[]

Visit monsters page for information on default monster behavior.
See the interactions page for a list of all interactions for this element.

Movement[]

  • Engineers, like all humans, are terrestrial creatures. They can also wade through shallow water.
  • If there is a build marker in the room, engineers will attempt to pathfind to the closest one. If there are no build markers, or if the engineer cannot find a path, they will simply sit in place.
    • The precise algorithm that dictates the path engineers take to their target is, frankly, a tad inscrutable. It's not clear what distances engineers try to minimize, or what determines the next waypoint they try to travel to. This subject will require further study.
  • Once an engineer locates a build marker, it becomes their target, and they will not pursue another marker unless their target is either built or becomes inaccessible.
  • Once an engineer is adjacent to their target, they will face the marker, remove any obstructions from the tile, then satisfy the marker there, all on the same turn. On the next turn, they acquire their next target marker.
    • If an engineer is on top of a build marker, it will become their target, but they will attempt to move off the tile before placing it. First they will try to move north, and if they cannot, south. If an engineer cannot move either north or south, they will wait in place until they can.
    • If an engineer is adjacent to multiple markers, they will prioritize building them in the following order: NW, W, SW, N, S, NE, E, and SE.

Vulnerabilities[]

Other[]

  • Engineers depress pressure plates but do not drop trapdoors, melt thin ice, or weigh down platforms.
  • If an engineer tries to place tarstuff or fluff in a spot where the blob would unstable, a tarstuff baby or puff appear instead.
  • Engineers have a processing sequence of 1050, which comes after all other monsters. This was likely implemented to make movement order easier to parse: engineers would never move after some monsters but before others.
